High diabetes-mellitus-linked mortality in Mexico
In this middle-income country with a high prevalence of overweight and obesity and with insufficient control of blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, diabetes was a cause of at least one third of all deaths between 35 and 74 years of age (twice the current indirect estimates for Mexico), with the excess mortality attributed chiefly to renal disease, vascular disease, infection, and acute diabetic crises.
